Job Description

This HARTING internship position is full-time (40 hours per week from May - August), paid, and on-site in Elgin, IL.

The Project Engineering Intern is responsible for designing and quoting new cable assemblies to support the HARTING Customized Solutions business (HCS). The Project Engineering Intern will function as the technical liaison between HARTING manufacturing and all outside entities (outside sales, distribution, and end customers). An additional focus will be helping to optimize our design/quote process to become more efficient.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist customers to complete assemblies with Value Added solutions. Work directly with the customers and the sales team to determine product requirements
  • Use technical knowledge of HARTING, Inc. connectors and capabilities to provide the customer with a custom solution that meets their needs
  • Develop/improve system and process requirements as needed to implement infrastructure to support the projects and processes
  • Establish agreed upon production times and steps between engineering and operations
  • Estimate production times, materials, and tooling to generate a quotation for the customer
  • Provide technical consultation, leadership, and liaison with outside vendors for products and materials used to manufacture value-added cable assemblies
  • Provide review of all technical specifications and drawings

  • Pursuing a 4-year degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of important QC principles
  • Experience with AutoCAD, or other 2D/3D CAD software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office


  • 0-1 years of engineering work experience in a related industry a plus
  • Experience in the following a plus: programming, prototyping, and fabrication
